coldplayBritish band Coldplay stressed that there was no plagiarism done on the Grammy Award-winning single “Viva La Vida” as claimed by another musician.

According to reports, musician Joe Satriani accused the group of copying from his song “If I Could Fly” which was released in 2004. The group has since denied the public accusations and is now filing their response to the federal court.

In the court papers filed on Monday in Los Angeles, Coldplay stated that Satriani’s song lacks “originality” and was in no way to receive copyright protection in the first place. Aside from that, the group stressed that the similarity was very minimal.

Satriani has made his claim last December, stating that significant portions of his song were copied. “Viva La Vida” went on to become an international hit, even bagging the Grammy for Song of the Year last February.

Coldplay also issued an official statement on their website regarding the matter.

“If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental and just as surprising to us as to him,” the group said.
