“Fast & Furious” sets year’s best opening weekend record at $72.5 million
Universal Picture’s “Fast & Furious” was clearly the biggest winner in last weekend’s box office by amassing $72.5 million in ticket sales, the best yet this year.
The high-adrenaline street-racing franchise booted out last week’s topnotcher “Monsters vs. Aliens.” The DreamWorks Animation film still performed strong with $33.5 million in ticket sales, piling up its two-week total to $105.7 million, according to studio estimates.
Media By Numbers President Paul Dergarabedian said that summer has begun early for the moviegoers.
“It’s summer time in April. We’ve seen the summer season stretch from what used to be Memorial Day through Labor Day, then the first of May through Labor Day. Now maybe with `Fast & Furious,’ it’s going to be early April as the beginning of summer,” he said.
