Award-winning multi-platinum artist Madonna won’t be allowed to adopt another child from Malawi. This was decided by the Malawi’s High Court on Friday. The pop star was bidding to adopt four-year old Mercy James.

Ken Manda, the court registrar, revealed that the decision to reject was due to Madonna not being a resident of the country. Malawi government was criticized before when Madonna was allowed to adopt 13-month old David Banda in 2006  because she was given special treatment. This time, however, the pop star’s request was denied.

Judge Esimie Chombo stated in her decision that allowing celebrity adoptions could lead to child trafficking.

“Anyone could come to Malawi and quickly arrange for an adoption that might have grave consequences on the very children that the law seeks to protect,” she said.
Alan Chinula, the pop star’s attorney, said that they would file an appeal with the Supreme Court.
