A woman from La Grande, Oregon finally got the invitation letter that was sent by her nephew from New Jersey for his high school graduation. However, here’s the catch – the invitation was for a high school graduation dated 1987.
The recipient, Theresa Scholossarek, discovered the invitation when she checked her mailbox last week. The envelope was postmarked June 2, 1987 and had been opened. It came from Toms River, New Jersey, where her brother, Hermann Ilnseher, currently resides.
Ilnseher recounted that his family noticed the absence of Scholossarek at that time but did not make a big deal out of it since they know she lived far away. He added that he expected his sister to send money instead, since she’d been doing the deed in the past.
U.S. Postal Service Portland District Spokesman Peter Hass said that the delay was very unfortunate and very unusual. He theorized that the envelope could have been misrouted and delivered to a wrong address, which could explain the opened envelope. He said that the mail was still delivered to Scholossarek because the mail was postmarked thus obliging them to deliver it despite the age.
Michael Ilnseher, Scholossarek’s nephew, is now a high school assistant principal in Atlanta and was amused about the situation.
